Borton uses Project-Based Learning (PBL) and Systems Thinking to implement the Arizona College and Career Readiness Standards (AZCCRS) for the English Language Arts (ELA). We have a leveled bookroom filled with multiple copy sets of quality children’s fiction and non-fiction literature that teachers can use for their small group reading instruction. Often, the content of students’ reading is related to their class project. The Next Steps Guided Reading Assessment helps us discover each child’s strengths and needs to be addressed in a balanced literacy program. Students have opportunities every day to be read to, to read independently or in a small group, to write, and to learn more about oral and written language.
